Hard Times

Our first topic and an important one. We are a small glazing company in Harlow, Essex and we are struggling to find work at the moment. We have been established for 50 years this year and nobody seems to want to know anymore, no newspapers want to run a spread and of course everyone wants paying for this privaledge. Is anyone else struggling as much as we are and what are you trying to do about it

  • Suggestion - update your website

Hi, had a quick look at your website.  May I suggest you add more pictures.  Also some of the pages are in a foreign language and I wasn't able to click through to Shops without getting an error message.  What are your keywords?  Hope you're using something like 'glazing in Harlow'.  Hope these suggestions help to generate more business from your website.

    Best Regards, Arabella

  • A few suggestions

Hi there, building on from what Arabella has said your website is in need of some work, you still have some pages with "lorem ipsum" placeholder text in there however having a better website isnt the only thing you could do in an attempt to drum up more business.

you could post classified ads on several sites for free :  www.vivastreet.co.uk is a prime example and as well as those sites i can highly recommend craigslist.org and gumtree.com

you can also submit your business to a number of web directories such as yahoo or wedotrades.co.uk

hope this is of some help and that things start improving for you soon

I have read the resposes from the other tradespacers and must agree wholeheartedly with what they have said.

Your website is really quite palin, by that I mean a simple colour overwritten with text. You need to put some life into it. There are literally thousands of templates available on the net which you can use. Also you need to sort out the Resouces Page. Seeing this on a web site puts people off.

You also appear to have a broken link to Your Shop, so visitors cannot see what you have to offer.

If you are relying on the internet to attract busiiness, the key is being seen. This is not happening for you - do you use google analytics? Send me your stats and I'll have a look. One thing I have found is your website is lacking inkeywords. Log on to www.rankingtoday.com and enter your web site url and you will see what I mean. If I can help with any of these issues, please get in touch. Although we are based in Spain, we still have a strong interest in business activity in the UK and have working relationships with business development companies in Britain.

I have been having a really tough time over last few months too, and I know of other colleagues and friends who are the same. I was really interested in the post which suggested optimise your website page, could the person who posted that tell me how you can change keywords??? My website came up really well, but would obviously like to take up their suggestions as to how to utlilise it fully......

What I have done in last few months in done lots of leaflets, and started doing talks and getting involved with like minded groups, windows are not my thing, but how about finding someone who is doing a talk, or running a course and then linking up with them??? (Sponsor the talk for a small sum and then do short talk before it starts? Leave publicity material for people to take.) It's a pity I operate in Kent otherwise would be very happy to forge a link. Actually might try this myself!!!

  • All great advice

Hello there, I'm in total agreement with the others, especially about your website.

You've added a number of pictures to your BT Tradespace page, what about adding some of those if you don't have new ones with a bit of information about the jobs you were doing.

Also, do your customers give you any feedback about the work you have done? If so, ask if you could use them for a testimony and put this on your site and get them to talk about you on other sites like this one and anywhere else that you have a listing.

Also, get your customers to refer you but do this gently as you don't want to appear too pushy.

Good luck! Let us know if and when you update your site.

  • Just a suggestion...

I think everyone's right about the website. I'm working on launching mine in the summer, and it's so important to make it attractive and interesting - hard work, but worth it, I think. You could also add an audio introduction - email me if you're interested and we could work out some ideas.
