Creating a cost effective website
I set up my first business website last year uisng Getting British Business online, free with Google. Although was ok, at the time I didn't realise the limitations. ie not having seo, working within an iframe etc.
As my business is new I do not have the funds to have my ideal e-commerce website built for me at the moment. However, I see lots of companies offering basic e-commerce websites for around £200. Can anyone tell me what to look out for and what the limitations are? Any suggestions would be welcome.

Creating a cost effective website
Hi,
I have also set up my website www.fragrances-4-less.co.uk with GBBO. At first it was quite daunting, then I discovered http://www.steegle.com/websites/google-sites-howtos/basics-gbbo-webinar which helped me a lot.
I saw another post from you asking how to advertise with a limited budget. Have you thought of using Google Ad words, I have recently started with them, and have had a lot more business. You could also try using Google Ad Sense, where you get paid for displaying advertisements on your website.
Hope this has been of some help (",).

Starting a website
When I first set up my website www.thesilverimpressioncompany.co.uk I initially went to a local independant web designer, I found them more willing to do a basic site for me at a discount which only cost around £300.00. Although it was very basic with no bells ans whistes it had everything I needed to start.
If you begin with a simple basic website, you will then have time to think about how you would like to go forward, you can add new pages, images and tools as you go along. It also gives you time to look at other websites and pick up ideas that you may wish to incoporate into your site, and before you know it you will have a site you can be proud of. there is no need to spend thousands on an all singing all dancing site to begin with, a site needs to grow organically, it needs to be nurtured, and if you set aside a budget each month to add to your site as you go along it will have less of a finacial impact.
A good e-com company would charge in the region of £2000 -£3000 pounds to design a good spec. website, so I would be wary of a company offering to do this for £200. As I mentioned you would be better finding a self employed local web designer, who you can work closely with on a one to one basis, who would probably charge under £500.00 for the basics.
Hope this helps - good luck.
