marketing challenge
Hi,
I have to say that I find marketing is the biggest challenge for me as a small business, - for example working out the best ways to do this, ... advertising etc...
I'm looking forward to other peoples posts as always willing to learn... I really want to grow in this for 2010 :)

Working out a few things...
Hi there,
You're not alone feeling like this about your marketing - there are so many ways you can promote your business.
What I can say is that you do need to do a few different things - just doing one won't help.
Where to start? What I tell all my clients is work out who your target market are and think about the where you can connect with them.
Here's an example of how knowing your target market really are (and by that I mean you decide who they are - who will want your products/services), then you will know what sort of marketing you need to do.
You also need to be clear on your product (for this example we will choose health and beauty products for new mums wanting to get back into shape).
Here we go: Your target market is new mums, with a young baby under 2, not going back to work, with good disposable income, into keeping fit and getting back into shape, and living in Surrey.
This target market will hang out at baby activity venues (not toddlers or pre-schooler activity venues); they will read baby and family magazines; they will go down the local gym as long as it has a creche (and they will spend time in the creche too).
So this should tell you what sort of marketing you need to be doing. I.e. approaching your local gym and creating a special offer for their members that use the creche whilst at the gym. E.g. When they book a session in the creche for their baby, they get a 10% off voucher for your product. The gym will promote this for you as it is adding value for their members and encourage their members to use the creche.
This is just an example, but hopefully you can see that by being clear on your product offering and qualities, on who you want to sell this product to - or who will want to buy this product - you can see that this on its own can give you a lot of insight into what exactly you should be doing.
Finally, take into consideration your budget, how much time you have to do your marketing and how much you can do yourself.
Hope this helps - let me know if you have any questions at all. :)

Finding the right option for you...
I think that what Alex posted was really helpful. I think its all about finding what works specifically for you and you business and customers. A marketing method that works for one may not work for another.
