Do people understand what a Chartered Surveyor does?

The range of activities undertaken by Chartered Surveyors is broad and diverse, extending from geomatics to marine surveys, from quantity surveying to chattels auctioneer. Do members feel that the term Chartered Surveyors is sufficiently well understood outside the profession to give a true and accurate identity or is the name confusing?

  • Real Estate Advisers

When I started my own practice in 1993 we thought the term Chartered Surveyor was too broad to cover the specialist advice we provided. We opted for Property Investement and Development Consultant. We subsequently changed to Real Estate Adviser reflecting the more global use of the term Real Estate. I am not sure the expression Chartered Surveyor is sufficiently understood by the public for it to accurately describe our activities.
